Stripped Session 9
Getting to know Riley, we have very similar personalities which doesn't surprise me as we are (almost) birthday twins with hers on July 3rd and mine the following day. We both love to talk, so her stripped session was a natural flowing conversation into one topic to the next.
The main topic that we kept circling back to was the love for her grandma. Grandma Hanna lost her battle with cancer on April 30, 2017 just a few short weeks before Riley graduated from high school, something her grandma wanted to see. Riley's broken heart and the loss was still very fresh the day we spoke. Tears filled her eyes as we talked about her getting ready for the graduation ceremony. She told me that she practiced walking in the heels that she would wear and also tried to figure out how she wouldn't cry as she knew she would be thinking of her grandma.
Once the time came for the ceremony, she did really well with her emotions until she gave her grandpa Hanna a flower that was meant for grandma Hanna. She embraced her family and cried in that moment and I reassured her that her grandma was also there. Riley glowed as she told me about her grandma's flowers and how she was the one who took her to get her wig when she lost her hair. They chose a wig that fooled a lot of people as it looked just like her natural hairstyle. She had and will always have a bond with her grandma that won't ever go away. I explained to her how lucky she was that she had all of those memories and moments to keep in her heart as not everyone gets to experience that type of love and friendship of a grandparent.
We also talked about how Riley will be moving very soon to head to South Dakota State University this summer to jump start her classes. She seems to be ready to move on to the next phase of her life as she didn't express any kind of fear of leaving Nebraska - only excitement. She isn't quite sure what her younger brother will do without her as he always likes to stand in her bedroom doorway to talk about her day. I have a feeling she will be having a lot of FaceTime conversations with him this next year. This summer, Riley has some amazing family and birthday trips planned that I think will be a perfect way to say goodbye to her past and hello to her future!
